While they may not have even started school yet, some of Werribee’s youngest residents are being exposed to tertiary education.
Deakin University has joined with Corpus Christi Primary School in Werribee to launch a playgroup that will be run by students from Deakin’s Werribee Learning Centre.
Deakin University education professor Andrea Nolan said the Corpus Kids Playgroup was a pilot program that would provide a variety of experiences for children and their parents.
“We’re excited to be part of this program, as it will give the youngest members of the Werribee community a chance to learn while at play, at the same time providing Deakin researchers and bachelor of early education students the opportunity to gain critical observation and experience of how children learn and develop through play,” Professor Nolan said.
Corpus Christi principal Linda Roynic said the playgroup was among a number of strategies the school was implementing.
“Finding innovative ways of engaging families in our learning community and developing a sense of partnership with them is a key objective,” Ms Roynic said.
The pilot program is operating this month each Wednesday from 9-10am at Corpus Christi Primary School.
It’s hoped it will become a permanent fixture at the school.
