After receiving a $750 grant from the Thermoskin Community Sports Fund, a Werribee netball club is vowing to set up scholarships to help girls from refugee and low-income families take part in the sport.
Wyndham Victory Netball Club, launched seven years ago, will provide players from disadvantaged backgrounds with the scholarships to cover the cost of their uniforms.
Club spokesman Phil Morley said that while netball was a relatively cheap sport to get into, there were girls from the refugee community who couldn’t afford to take part. Morley said the club focused on encouraging people to take up netball regardless of their age, religion or culture.
