A Werribee driver who allegedly performed burnouts in front of a marked police car, with a pregnant passenger beside him, faces a string of charges.
Police were astounded when the 22-year-old spun the tyres of his ute in the Werribee Plaza car park about 2pm last Wednesday.
There were more shocks for police when they pulled him over. They discovered his female passenger was pregnant and his Ford ute was unregistered, a spokesman said.
The car had false number plates and the driver had already had his licence suspended.
The spokesman said it was shocking behaviour in a busy car park and could have caused serious injury to bystanders.
“There were a number of families and children in the car park,” he said.
The driver’s car was impounded and he will be charged on summons with numerous traffic offences. Westgate road policing officer Acting Senior Sergeant Fiona Waters said police were targeting irresponsible road users in the lead-up to Christmas.
“Many collisions are preventable, with speed, drugs and alcohol, inexperience and driver error accounting for a significant percentage of this trauma,” Ms Waters said.
She said the campaign would focus on drink drivers and motorists distracted by mobile telephones, entertainment systems or passengers.
