Heat on Wyndham council over spending, issues

A western suburbs leader is calling on Wyndham councillors to start responding to concerns about their council’s handling of recent issues.

Former Hobsons Bay mayor Tony Briffa said Wyndham residents were entitled to believe their councillors were not putting the community’s interests first, after it was revealed the council spent almost $355,000 on a private investigator and hearings at the Fair Work Commission.

“Residents are understandably concerned that council has wasted so much money,’’ Cr Briffa said.

‘‘The primary role of a councillor is to represent the community.”

Most Wyndham councillors chose not to comment on the issue. Only councillors Intaj Khan and Gautam Gupta have publicly backed Wyndham chief executive Kerry Thompson.

Other councillors refused to comment and referred the Weekly to mayor Heather Marcus or the council’s media unit, which issued a statement on Cr Marcus’s behalf saying all councillors fully supported Ms Thompson.
