A Wyndham Central College student is heading to Federal Parliament later this year after winning The Other Election.
Year 10 student Danae Haynes beat 646 other students to win an ‘Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience’ initiative, which required her to write and record the speech she would give to Parliament if she was elected as Australia’s first indigenous prime minister.
Danae, whose speech was about overcoming stereotypes, said the election of an indigenous prime minister “should not be a big deal”.
“So many times when I have told someone that I am indigenous, their whole perspective of me changes,” she said.
“At these times I feel little. I am made to be less than everyone else. I am put in a situation where I am made to feel bad about myself.”
