A DAMAGED ceiling at Galvin Park Secondary College has resulted in students being sent home from school in order to cater for the busy VCE exam period.
Heavy rain two weeks ago caused the collapse of a roof in the science building, forcing the closure of the science wing and throwing exam plans into chaos.
School council vice-president Anthony Monahan said the closure would result in a logistics headache for the school as it required extensive exclusion zones for year 12 exams.
Mr Monahan had been hopeful of minimal disruption to operations, however an Education Department spokesman confirmed this week all students in years 7, 8 and 9 were told to stay home for one day.
“As an initial short-term measure, the school asked students to stay home for a day, rotating on a year-level basis,” he said.
Year 7s were kept home last Thursday, year 8s missed Monday, while year 9s were kept home last Tuesday.
Excursions have also been brought forward to ease the load, while portable classrooms have been provided this week.
Mr Monahan last week told the Weekly damage to the roof was the result of an ongoing lack of funding from the department.
“We have leaks in all of our buildings, so it’s no surprise that this damage has occurred.”
