Felippa reflects on 101 years of life

Felippa Lentini turns 101.

When Felippa Lentini was born, the world was a very different place.

The Werribee resident celebrated her 101st birthday last week and reflected on what she says has been a long and happy life.

Born in Vizzini, Sicily, in 1915, Felippa went to school until about the age of 10 then left to begin working as a dressmaker.

She married, but her husband died at war in 1943. She then remarried.

In 1955, aged 39, Felippa, together with her family, abandoned all they knew and decided to make a new life in a foreign land. They boarded a ship named Roma and travelled to Australia.

Upon arrival, the Lentinis began their new lives in Werribee. It’s where Felippa’s remained for her entire life.

Her days were mainly spent sewing at Latoof & Cahill, a clothing mill in Werribee. The factory, which employed more than 120 people, specialised in making air force jackets and pyjamas.

Felippa has fond memories of going on day trips along the coast to Lorne and Geelong.

Like many Italians, cooking was always a priority for her. She always took great pride in her home, ensuring it was in immaculate condition.

Felippa also has fond memories of evenings at the Italian social club, enjoying a meal with friends and family. Good food was always important at all social gatherings.

Felippa, a resident at Baptcare Wyndham Lodge in Werribee, celebrated her birthday on Friday with her fellow residents and family. She has a son Tom, and two grandchildren, John and Lisa.

The secret to living so long, according to Felippa: just keep busy.
