IN FOCUS: Wyndham Park PS – A learning community

Actively upholding the values expressed in the school’s motto, “Aspire Learn Achieve”, has enabled Wyndham Park Primary School to grow enrolments to approximately 400 students from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds since 2011. Principal Laban Toose believes the students thrive on the school’s values of respect, responsibility and safety.

“Our purpose is to provide an opportunity for every student to grow academically, socially and emotionally through living the school’s motto and values,” Mr Toose says.

“The school’s beliefs revolve around the growth of every student, supported by best-practice teaching in literacy, numeracy and student wellbeing initiatives that make Wyndham Park Primary school a purposeful learning environment.

“We are committed to the School Wide Positive Behaviour philosophy that drives our solution-focused attitude in the ways we interact, behave and learn.

“We also offer our students state-of-the-art buildings in which to learn, and wonderful surrounds that include Heathdale and Glen Orden Wetlands, a full-sized sports oval with synthetic surface and plexipave basketball courts.”

Information Communication Technology plays a vital role in Wyndham Park’s engaging learning activities in all curriculum areas. The award-winning Robotics Program is another example of full embracing ICT across the whole school.

Student growth is supported by a detailed Intervention Program, delivered by highly trained teachers and education support staff. It targets individual student learning goals in the following areas: Literacy, Numeracy, English as an additional language and social and emotional learning needs by using detailed evidence based and referral processes. The student classroom program is enriched by specialist Physical Education, Spanish and Arts programs.

The school is part of the Wyndham extended Schools Hub, which has been developed to provide the best possible support for every child and family through partnerships with local agencies, including The Smith Family, Maternal and Child Health Services and Wyndham Community Education Centre.

The school aims to nurture positive relationships within the community through:

• Fostering a more visible presence of parents and community involved in the classrooms.

• Families being given opportunities for learning to assist their children’s academic learning.

• Offering support such as translators to help families feel more comfortable when discussing their children’s learning.

• Continuing to develop and implement multiple sources of communication.

The school aims to support the social and emotional wellbeing of all members of the school community through:

• Enhanced transitions.

• Use of common language (BSEM).

• Partnering and working with external agencies to support our entire school community.
