Point Cook has been named the online shopping capital of Australia.
A new study that tracked the number of Australia Post deliveries between January, 2014, and December last year reveals people living in postcode 3030 are the nation’s most prolific consumers of online goods as delivered by Australia Post.
Ben Franzi, Australia Post’s ecommerce general manager, said the study’s findings suggested Point Cook residents, like other people living in growth areas, were shopping online for products and brands they love that might not have a retail presence in their local areas.
“It appears that the number of new housing developments in suburbs like Point Cook, Derrimut, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina are creating a huge online retail boom,” he said.
Hoppers Crossing came overall second in the survey.
According to the survey, Point Cook residents appear to be the nation’s biggest online consumers of homewares and appliances.
They purchased the second most department and variety store goods, media products and Christmas purchases, and came fourth for most items of clothing delivered by Australia Post in the country.
In Victoria, postcode 3030 received the equal most deliveries of speciality food and wine alongside Grovedale (3216) in Geelong.
Point Cook resident Sam Dumesny, who is a mother and works full-time, receives about five parcels a week.
The 41-year-old said she shopped online to avoid wasting time in traffic and at shopping centres.
Point Cook’s Amber Xuereb said she buys most of her clothing online because she finds it convenient.
Sam and Amber’s motivations to use online shopping support the study’s findings, which list an influx of young families into an area, distance from shops and improved digital access as reasons for an increase in online spending.
“Wherever we see a new housing development … we’re likely to see online shopping growth as well,” the report stated.
