Joyce and Felix Spiteri have their fingers crossed for sunshine as preparations for the Werribee Orchid Club’s spring show gain momentum.

The avid gardeners and long-time club members will compete against some of the region’s best hobbyists and horticulturalists at the Werribee show on September 26 and 27.

Mrs Spiteri said preparing for such a show required dedication.

“This season has been quite harsh on the plants so they’ve bloomed quite late,” she said. “We’re hoping for some warm weather and sunshine for the next few weekends so we can choose the best plants to show.”

The Sunshine couple, who have been growing orchids for show for nearly 18 years, will compete in the open B section, for amateur growers.

“We have quite a few orchids now. Certain ones are more temperamental than others,” Mrs Spiteri said. “It’s wonderful to be able to display them and say, ‘That’s my plant’.”

This year’s Werribee spring show will include potting and floral art demonstrations and orchid plant and accessory sales.

The show will run from 9am-4pm at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee, 601 Heaths Road, Werribee. Entry, $4.
