It was a blast from the past for Mossfiel Primary School when students dug up a time capsule from 1985.
Former pupils concealed school work, uniforms, books and even a canteen list in the capsule, which was last week opened by their successors, 31 years on.
One of those on hand for the opening was school business manager Barbara Murphy, who clearly remembers the day the capsule was buried. Ms Murphy, who retired on Friday after 41 years at the school, was nostalgic upon seeing the capsule.
“I remember the day students buried the time capsule in the school grounds in 1985,” she said.
“We received the capsule from the government at the time and students were working hard, doing things to put in it.”
Looking over the goods stored in the capsule, the canteen price list stood out for Ms Murphy.
“It was interesting to see the canteen list that I’d typed on a typewriter many years ago … I was pleased to see I couldn’t find any mistakes,” she said.
“The price of a pie back then was just 68 cents.”
Reflecting on 41 years at the Hoppers Crossing school, Ms Murphy said the growth in student numbers and changes in technology were the biggest changes she’d witnessed.
Now she’s preparing for a trip to Honolulu later this year.
Then she plans to relax and spend more time with her family.
