Bands to take fest test

The western suburbs’ best musical talent will be showcased when Wyndham FReeZa hosts the western regional Battle of the Bands final.

Four bands will perform on Friday night, battling for a spot on stage at next year’s Moomba Festival in Melbourne.

Half Breed Heroes, representing Wyndam, will be joined by Gravemarkings (Maribyrnong), Scoot Molly (Moonee Valley) and Tommy Castles Band (Hobsons Bay).

Wyndham FReeZa committee co-ordinator Jordan Barrow says the competition harnesses the arts and creativity of Wyndham city.

“It also gives the musical acts a platform to showcase their talent,” he said. “It’s a fun way of getting everybody together.”

FReeZa committee member Maddie Lewis, 15, says there will be plenty of musical diversity.

“We’re had our most diverse year yet,” she says.

“It has been a real mixed bag, which is encouraging to see. Being given the opportunity to perform at Moomba is enticing for the different bands.”

The Battle of the Bands western region final is at Wyndham Youth Resource Centre from 6pm on November 20.

Meanwhile, Wyndham FReeZa recently secured a state government grant of $72,000.

“We will be spreading the funding out over two years,” Mr Barrow said.

“It will go towards a minimum of 15 shows, from music events to skate competitions and arts and culture events.”
