Amber Kennedy has been to her share of bad weddings.
The 37-year-old Hoppers Crossing resident says she became sick of seeing bad performances by wedding celebrants overtake couples’ special day, and she decided she could do better.
Today, she is the driving force behind her self-named business Amber the Celebrant.
“You shouldn’t actually remember anything about the celebrant, if they do a good job,” she said.
“You should remember things like if the groom cried when he saw his bride, and that they laughed.”
Ms Kennedy, who conducts weddings, vow renewals and naming days, will preside over about 50 weddings this year and is already taking bookings for 2016 and 2017.
She has also helped set up business group Getting Married Here, which has more than 20 members from the wedding industry.
“Weddings are a $2 billion a year industry in Australia and I believe the Wyndham area has huge potential to benefit from this industry,” she said.
“We have some amazing venues and awesome suppliers and I want to see us get on the map for that.”
Ms Kennedy has put her hat in the ring for the first time for this year’s Wyndham Business Awards.
The awards are open to registered businesses in the city in the categories of tourism and hospitality, franchise, home-based, manufacturing, not-for-profit, retail, service, new and emerging, and transport and storage.
Awards will also be presented to the business of the year and the business person of the year.
Entries close on June 26 and the winners will be named on August 28.
