The campaign to prevent Melton Sewerage Authority from polluting Werribee River with effluent lost a further round recently with rejection of appeals by the Town Planning Appeals Tribunal. The Tribunal ruled that a permit for the proposed sewerage works should be granted subject to conditions. In a remarkable manoeuvre, the tribunal changed the basis of the appeal so that the issue of the permit became a matter of course.

The Board of Works last week confirmed that the Western Region, including Werribee, produced more than half of all Victorian “special waste” which will be treated at its $34 million toxic waste plant. But the board’s general manager Neville Smith denied that the high waste-producing Western Region was a preferred toxic waste plant.

A public meeting to discuss a Wyndham council decision to put kindergartens into private hands next year will be held tonight at 7pm at the Werribee Civic Centre. The proposal to tender out the city’s 16 council-run kindergartens next year has angered early child care groups, who claim privately run kindergartens will not benefit children.

This was the frightening reality Inna Hemingway faced when she found her five-year-old son Ryan on a Sunday afternoon almost six months ago. Ryan suffered a serious brain injury in the ordeal, prompting a warning from his parents to others to be vigilant about the safety of garage doors.
