Tests conducted over the past 10 weeks show that, although Werribee South beach is “significantly polluted”, it is far from the worst of the bayside beaches. Beaches that have shown consistently higher pollution readings than Werribee South are Mordialloc, Altona and Dromana.

Werribee council may join in partnership with private enterprise in a range of projects, from bio-technology to helping fledgling business come out of the home garage. Councillor John Gibbons said he wanted council to be able to take out large loans for joint business ventures. Council also wanted to take a more active role in helping businesses establish themselves in Werribee.

Young drivers are killing themselves on Werribee’s roads because of inexperience and impatience, a Werribee traffic operations group officer said last week. Sergeant Ross Garing urged drivers not to become a statistic in 1996 after figures released last week showed that Werribee recorded the highest number of road fatalities in Victoria last year.

The Werribee Volunteer Coast Guard has appealed to boat owners to be better prepared before heading on to Port Phillip Bay, after seven rescues in the past month. The December/January period continued to be the busiest year on record for the volunteer unit. Flotilla commander Stuart Beales said most rescues were preventable if boats were serviced more regularly.
