Beloved cars are a triumph over the rest

These cars triumph over the rest – just ask Graeme Oxley and Terry Roche, who are president and club captain of the Triumph Car Club of Victoria.

The club, which Mr Oxley helped found in 1983, has more than 200 members who regularly get together to show off their cars and drive around Victoria, or in some cases, interstate, drawing admiring glances from passersby.

Some of the cars have even been used as props in commercials and TV shows, including Winners and Losers.

“When we have car displays, the public love our cars,” Mr Oxley said. “They would have to be one of the most reliable cars on the road.”

Mr Oxley, who lives in Wyndham Vale, has had a lifelong affinity with Triumphs.

His dad was a Standard Triumph Massey Ferguson dealer in the ’50s and ’60s.

Mr Oxley got his first Triumph – a red 1960 Herald Coupe – when he was an apprentice in the air force.

He currently has three models, including a 1975 red manual overdrive Triumph 2.5 PI that has clocked more than 643,000 kilometres on the speedo.

Mr Roche, who joined the club 10 years ago, said members took great pleasure in driving around in their Triumphs, while many partners also joined in on rides and social events.

“We’re not technical nuts; we’ll go for an early-morning drive and take over a cafe and enjoy each other’s company,” Mr Roche said.
