The Hillier View: Finger off the pulse

Just when I thought the council had reached a zenith of being out of touch with its constituents, along comes its latest proclamation: the Wyndham leisure and events centre, when it reopens midyear, will be known as the AquaPulse and Encore Events Centre … a moment to reflect – the what?

If you think that’s amusing, wait until you read the explanation as per the press statement.

The name AquaPulse was selected as “the Latin word, aqua, meaning water, when combined with pulse – the rhythmical contraction and expansion of an artery at each beat of the heart – symbolises the physicality of the fitness facilities plus the excitement and fun of the pool and slide facilities.

(Hillier Aussie dictionary definition: Aqua, meaning blue, which is what the council has made here. Pulse, meaning pulse, something the council doesn’t have its finger on.)

Encore was chosen from the French term meaning a demand, as by applause, for a repetition of a song, act or performance of a number.

Encore represents the world-class acts and events that will take place at the events centre and captures Wyndham residents’ thirst for quality entertainment.

Pardon my French, but that is a load of horse manure. If it wasn’t so farcical it would be headlining the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

At least Eagle Stadium had a minuscule of relevance. This is just plain embarrassing.

Apparently, the community was consulted on this one in the same manner as for Eagle Stadium.

I am still yet to hear from one person who filled in a form or answered a question.

This decision has lit up the social media platforms and I have not seen one positive reaction.

When is this council going to listen to the people? The APEEC will not be open till at least midyear so there is time to come up with something more sensible by then, surely?

The centre looks like it’s a winner, and for 55 million dollars it would want to be.
