The Hillier View: Solutions, not reports

Local real estate identity Rob Westwood started a social media meltdown when he suggested on Facebook that the way to fix the parking problems in Werribee’s CBD was to introduce parking meters.

A robust debate ensued with many suggestions and ideas. The mayor went on radio talking about congestion and the lack of buses, but I believe the council’s parking strategy is still a couple of months off being released.

The problem is not confined just to the CBD; it’s also at our train stations. I visited Masters in Williams Landing the other day and struggled to get a car park. It was packed, as were all the surrounding streets.

When I walked into the store there might have been a dozen people inside. The carpark is obviously being used by commuters at Williams Landing station. It’s the same story at Hoppers, Werribee and Laverton.

The CBD needs a multi-level carpark, either in Barnes Place or at the back of Ballan House, something that has been talked about for more than a decade but has never materialised.

The proposed carpark in Cherry Street won’t make a big impact if – as I hear – it will be mostly used for council staff parking. Like many others, I ration my visits to the CBD on a strictly ‘have to’ basis.

There are some very good shops and eateries there, but they don’t get my business because of the parking.

The cultural centre has nowhere near enough parking for the events it runs. Many expect the opening of the regional rail link to make a significant impact at local train stations. We shall see.

The parking situation is like the roads. We are playing catch-up and it’s leading to more and more frustration for everyone. This is also increasing the aggression behind the wheel, and that’s an even bigger social problem.

I don’t have the definitive answer, but what I do know is that we don’t need a report that tells us we have a problem.

We need a report that offers options and a plan of action.
