February 12, 1975

The state government’s Urban Renewal Authority and Werribee Council have formed a committee to investigate the expansion of Werribee’s shopping district into the area bounded by Watton, Bridge, Anderson, McDonald and Wedge streets. Liaison committee chairman Cr Neville Hudson said expanding Werribee’s shopping district would help smaller retailers because it would attract more people to the city centre.

February 13, 1985

Werribee CFA captain Darryl Wells has prepared a list of 31 high fire-risk buildings in the Werribee area. Many of the buildings have no fire protection equipment, while others have equipment incorrectly installed or poorly maintained. Several of the buildings on the list regularly contain several hundred people at a time. Werribee councillor Glen Clark said the list would open a can of worms. “You’ll see all sorts of people duck for cover when it is made public,” he said.

February 8, 1995

A Werribee publican has called for an independent state government inquiry into the former Werribee Council’s role in a proposal to redevelop Centenary Hall as a gaming venue. Barry Main said the Local Government Minister should demand an investigation into the council’s financing of the project so far. He said the council had spent more than $160,000 while apparently uncertain of the hall’s financial viability as a gaming venue.

Wyndham residents are still counting the cost after what meteorologists described as a 150-year flood event. More than 150 millimetres fell in 24 hours. With emergency services run off their feet responding to pleas for assistance from across the city, some crews expressed dismay at reports of some being abused and even spat on by angry motorists after the floods forced the closure of roads.
