The Hillier View: Sorry, Hoppers Crossing Apex Club

Firstly, an apology to president Matthew O’Donnell and Hoppers Crossing Apex Club, which I killed off in this column last week.

I should have written that Werribee Apex Club is handing in its charter, as Hoppers is alive and well and has been since 1979. I did receive some feedback from service club members who thought I was deriding their worth to the community. That’s so inaccurate.

I don’t question the value and the good that service clubs do overall for the community, but I do question the personal motivation of some members who I believe, as I wrote, use this community facade for personal business opportunities.

That’s something I find not in the spirit of the organisations. You only have to go for a three or four kilometre walk almost anywhere in Wyndham and you’ll come across some facility that has been made possible by the work and generosity of Rotary, Lions or Apex.

I fear, though, that the nature and fabric of these clubs is being eroded and they face a bleak future in their intended state and role in the community.

Werribee Apex is still holding its farewell dinner this Saturday night at the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club. Call Darren for details on 0413 607 645.

Lack of grunt by Wyndham council

I must say I’m disappointed by the lack of grunt shown by our council in this state election window. We need them all to be out and about, making sure we get what we need. There have been a few council-generated press releases and a few photo opportunities, but very little that has actually made a difference. I can only imagine what a difference all our councillors could make if they actually united to serve their constituents. Pick an issue like roads and go and belt a few heads. Stop hiding behind online petitions and actually put your heads on the block. Could it ever happen? I doubt it but am willing to be proved wrong.

St Andrews’ Parish Fair is coming up at the school grounds in Greaves Street North from 10am on Saturday, November 15. Expect all the usual food, drinks and entertainment and, of course, the car raffle.
