THE HILLIER VIEW: We have our areas of expertise

In my very long media career, I have been the MC at thousands of events, ranging from two-and-a-dog shows to a capacity crowd at the Myer Music Bowl.

My job is to go on stage, do the introduction or whatever, and not knock anyone over as I exit.

I did a function recently at which something that has driven me mad for years popped up again. The sound system at this event decided to die three quarters of the way through the night.

Did I turn the microphone on differently? Did someone drop it? Did someone spill beer on to the mixer?

No, no, no.

It must be the batteries in the microphone.

Again, no.

What I don’t understand is why almost every person in the room assumes that I can fix the sound system.

Do we ask the pilot to fix the plane when you are grounded at Tullamarine?

Do you reckon George from MasterChef fixes the ovens when they go haywire? My mate Malcolm can drive a truck and plenty of other heavy vehicles, but he knows squat about fixing them.

I have friends who fly planes, who are chefs, and who drive buses and trucks – all great skills.

We all have our talents and that is how the world goes around.
