We have had one of those electronic speed signs parked in our street for the past week. It’s one of those that shows you how fast you’re going, and if you’re under the limit (50km/h in this case) a smiley face comes up. If you’re over, it reads ‘too fast’.
So what’s the point? I watched this closely and about 75 per cent of cars were well over the limit. There’s definitely a speeding problem in my street. My problem is that the sign was on the wrong side of the road as most of the speeding happens going the other way. Would it not make more sense to have these cameras actually operating as proper speed cameras? Instead of ‘too fast’, how about ‘you’re nicked’ or ‘say goodbye to three points and 200 bucks’. That would slow drivers down immediately.
On that subject, I saw a white ute in my rear vision mirror on Hogans Road last week. It was just on dark and not quite time to turn on headlights, which was handy as I could see that one of his headlights and one of his park lights were smashed. When he passed me, at well over the 60 limit, I saw that two of his tail lights were also broken. There was no point reporting it either . . . he had no number plates! And how many white utes are there in the west?
Well done, Chris
Congratulations to Chris Byrne on being named Business Person of the Year at the recent Wyndham Business Awards. Chris was the first sponsor of this column in a paper that now doesn’t exist.
I have known him since the mid-1980s, when he started as a salesman at Werribee Mazda. He’s incredibly loyal to everyone he comes across. He’s a straight shooter and an engaging human being. Chris calls a spade a spade but his strong family values come across in his business dealings. He’s an astute businessman who has made sure he has quality people working with him. The contribution Westpoint Ford makes to many community organisations, like the 20th Man Foundation, doesn’t go unnoticed. I congratulate him and thank him for his support, not just for me, but for the community in general.
