Werribee Shire Council has reaffirmed its request for an inquiry into the suspension of its engineer a year ago. Until the situation is resolved, the council is unable to appoint anyone to the position of shire engineer. Council suspended its engineer on August 13, 1973, after he was charged on several counts of fraudulently applying council money and falsifying documents with intent to defraud.

Werribee Shire will be included in the 1985 Telecom Western Suburbs community phone book thanks to a submission prepared by the Banner, local MLA Dr Ken Coghill and the shire council. The last-minute reprieve was announced by Telecom chief general manager Mel Ward on Monday. The change of heart came after a Telecom spokesman said earlier that a decision to omit the shire from the new book was irreversible.

A Laverton mother of five accused of neglecting her children feared her family would be torn apart by protection workers from the Department of Health and Community Services unless something was done to prevent them from entering her home. She and her husband have been repeatedly accused of sexually and physically abusing the children and failing to care for them. She said she strongly denied the allegations.

A Wyndham mother of two whose children were sexually abused by a member of her family is outraged at the pedophile’s jail sentence and will appeal to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a review. The offender, in his late teens, was sentenced to three years in a youth detention centre earlier this month after being caught with thousands of pornographic images and videos of children.
