40 years ago

August 21, 1974

Werribee Shire Council lost the first round of a fight to prevent a developer discharging sewerage effluent into the Werribee River just west of the town. The Town Planning Tribunal ruled that a permit issued by Werribee council was invalid and conditions imposed by the permit had no force.

30 years ago

August 22, 1984

Werribee Park’s future should be known in the next month. Government spokesmen have denied it, but Werribee Park board members and local representatives are convinced the state government has already decided on the park’s future. The park has been in the red and needs more funds to continue operating.

20 years ago

August 17, 1994

After six years as a Werribee councillor, Shane Bourke, of Rick Wolany Toyota, has been elected mayor for 1994-95. He said a “whole host” of challenges faced Werribee, the most immediate being the local government boundary reviews.

10 years ago

August 18, 2004

A Wyndham school principal is being investigated by police and the Education Department following an independent audit of school finances earlier this year. Sources have told the Banner about $100,000 has allegedly gone missing from a school’s coffers over a period of time and might have been used for gambling.
