July 3, 1974

Moves are being made in western municipalities to phase out the Board of Works’ Werribee Sewerage Farm in order to return the land to the people of Victoria. Cr Laurie Etherton has expressed concerns that the Board of Works apparently has no intention of altering its sewerage treatment methods in such a way as would enable the land to be released.

30 years ago

July 4, 1984

A search for a suspected murder victim in Werribee on Saturday cost the police more than $8000. A helicopter, boats, cars and dogs were used in the search before the “victim” was found by accident – alive and well. A Werribee police spokesman told the Banner fears for the Yarraville woman’s safety arose when a car was found on Duncans Road, near Loyola Road, at 4am.

June 29, 1994

A new RSL club with more poker machines, sporting facilities and function rooms could bring new life to the old Werribee District Hospital site in Synnot Street. The Werribee RSL, situated at Kelly Park, has become one of the best-performing clubs in Victoria. More than 3000 people visit the club weekly.According to the manager, John Dean, the venue is now too small to meet demand.

June 30, 2004

Efforts to save the Werribee River have received their biggest fillip in 20 years under reforms proposed in the state government’s white paper into water management. The proposed changes include empowering the Port Phillip Catchment Management Authority to properly manage the river, bringing its protection in line with other state waterways.
