MY WYNDHAM: Shirley Cameron, Werribee

Shirley Cameron has been a part of Wyndham’s kitchens since the first edition of her cookbook, Cookery The Australian Way, was published in 1966. If you were to ask her where her favourite place to eat in Werribee is, she would say her home.

What do you like most about living in this area?

All the activities there are. I love going to the gymnasium at Victoria University and staying active. The outdoor swimming pool is just magical.

Are you part of any clubs?

I belong to the Werribee Wagtails (a bird club) and I volunteer at the State Rose Garden. I play Scrabble at the library but I’m a hopeless player.

What is your favourite memory of the area?

Bird watching at the Western Treatment Plant – it is such a lovely area. I love walking through there and seeing the river red gums. Those trees are very old and large and gnarly. I often look at them and wonder, “Who sat on that branch 100 years ago?”

What do you miss most about the area?

That would be the State Research Farm just as you drive into Werribee. There were sheep all throughout that paddock and you could enjoy the country atmosphere. Now Werribee has become a large city, traffic is difficult and it’s very congested.

What would you change in your neighbourhood?

I would upgrade the road system, particularly Sneydes Road and Hoppers Lane.
