On road to beat cancer

These cyclists will be taking the ultimate scenic route next week when they ride 1000 kilometres between Werribee and Bendigo to raise funds to develop a cancer support house in Werribee.

Twenty-nine riders and six support crew will take off from Hoppers Lane in Werribee this Saturday and spend a week riding to Geelong then along the Great Ocean Road and up through Hamilton and Horsham before arriving at the Rotary District 9800 Conference in Bendigo.

The fundraiser has been organised by RoCan, a trust established through Williamstown Rotary Club to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and help with research into the cause and cure of the disease.

Ride for a Cause organiser Yvonne Moon has spent 16 years championing RoCan after her lifelong friend Anna Buckley died from ovarian cancer.

Ms Moon is keen to raise about $90,000 through the ride to help fund a cancer support house along the lines of Ronald McDonald House.

The facility, which Ms Moon hopes can be located along Hoppers Lane (near the Werribee Mercy and soon-to-be St Vincent’s Private Werribee hospitals), will provide overnight accommodation for families whose loved ones are undergoing treatment.

“There is such a need in Werribee and in the west,” Ms Moon said.

She also wants to fund an early detection test for ovarian cancer, adding that many women are under the misguided impression that the disease can be picked up by pap tests.
