Wyndham Relay For Life team thinks big for cancer research

Wyndham Relay For Life organisers are on a mission to make this year’s event the biggest community event in Wyndham.

The relay, which raises money for the Cancer Council, will be held at the Victoria University athletics track, Hoppers Lane, Werribee, on April 18-19.

Chairman Brendan Andrew hopes as many people as possible will sign up to take part.

“We already get a good cross-section of the community taking part, but we want to encourage as many people as possible to join in,” he said.

Already, 100 teams have registered to take on the challenge of running, jogging or walking the track for 24 hours.

Mr Andrew hopes at least 30 per cent of the relay teams will raise $5000, with all the money going specifically to cancer research. “We’re trying to make a big difference,” he said. “And we want to put Wyndham on the map as the biggest fundraising area. We’ve been second a few times and this year we’d like to be first.”

There are also plans to get local businesses involved in the relay by decorating Werribee’s Watton Street in the Cancer Council’s signature colour of purple.

The relay event starts at noon on April 18, with a candlelight ceremony honouring cancer patients and survivors at 6pm. The closing ceremony will be at noon the next day.
