Wyndham could be home to an exclusive housing estate with ‘acre-sized’ blocks if one Wyndham councillor gets his way.
Economic portfolio-holder Intaj Khan is keen to see developers create another luxury housing estate modelled on Sanctuary Lakes, with large blocks so families can fit tennis courts and pools, keep horses even, and have more room to move.
Cr Khan said available land in North Tarneit or Mount Cottrell would be ideal for the estate.
He said that based on current land prices in the area, families could expect to pay about $1 million for a generously sized block and their dream home – less than 35 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD.
“I want to see super lots that really attract the top-end market,” Cr Khan said. “If we just offer 400-square-metre blocks, we’re only attracting the lower end of the property market.
“There are a number of people who would like to have an acre [0.4-hectare] or larger block – and they can afford it.
“You can have a luxurious life in Wyndham. We have the coast, we have a country lifestyle and we’re close to the city – what more could you want?”
A similar development is now under construction in Melbourne’s north.
The Hidden Valley estate at Wallan is selling blocks up to 4.4 hectares (11 acres) in size. The estate has lakes, walking trails, an equestrian centre, and 18-hole golf course and country club.
Cr Khan said too many new Wyndham estates were offering smaller blocks, and he was keen to see more variety for discerning buyers with cash to spend.
Meanwhile, Point Cook will be home to yet another 1800 residents after state Planning Minister Richard Wynne approved a new 600-house estate.
Onsite works are expected to start on a 43-hectare vacant lot along Point Cook Road in the next month, including a $4 million extension of Fongeo Drive to link it to Point Cook Road and give better access to the Princes Freeway.
The first land release, which will include blocks of between 250 and 800 square metres, goes on sale this month.
Building is tipped to start once land is titled and settled in September this year, with the first residents expected to move into the estate, to be called Life, by September next year.
In Truganina, works have begun at the Westbrook estate, and people who bought blocks of land in the estate’s initial releases are set to start building in the second half of this year.
Dennis Family chief executive Peter Levinge said roads were being built and power, water, high-speed fibre internet and telecommunications services connected within the estate.
The Westbrook estate has proved popular among buyers, with its most recent land release in October last year selling out in less than two hours.
It was one of the fastest sell-outs in the developer’s history, with some buyers travelling from Sydney.
