Wyndham council has given ghost ship plans the heave ho – and the playground at Bayview Park will be rebuilt in a similar design to the original.
Wyndham council has listened to the community and after feedback from more than 300 residents has agreed to scrap a planned metal ghost ship design.
The original playground, based on a pirate ship design, was burnt down in an arson attack in September 2014.
Sara Mitchell, of the Point Cook Action Group, said the community campaign for the project had been arduous but worth the effort.
“We offered council an alternative design to what they brought to the table,” she said. “After consulting with the community, they came through, which is just great.
“The initial process was flawed, which is a shame, but common sense has prevailed.”
Council leisure, sport and open space portfolio-holder Peter Maynard said the council had adjusted the design in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour at the site.
“We are investigating wood look-alike products or alternative constructing techniques that could be used to construct the playground to make it more difficult to burn,” he said.
Construction on the playground is expected to begin next month and be completed by July.
