For 15 years, Wyndham residents have raised funds for cancer research through the Relay for Life.
This year they plan to do so on a bigger scale than ever.
Anne-Marie Dey has been involved in the fundraiser since its inception and enjoyed seeing it grow from a small event at Galvin Park to a much larger one at Wyndham Sporting Complex.
“In 2002, we had 22 teams and raised $45,000,” she said. “Compare that to last year’s event – we raised $350,000 with 111 teams participating.
“I got involved after seeing an article in the paper. I had a friend who had recently been diagnosed with cancer and thought it was a good thing to get involved in. It makes me feel like I’m helping people with all types of cancer.”
Ms Dey said this year the Relay for Life committee aimed to reach out and involve newly arrived migrants and other cultural communities.
Wyndham Relay for Life chairman Brendan Andrew said more than $2 million had been raised over 15 years.
“We’re all about developing it into a real community event with community and family groups, and schools,” he said.
Wyndham’s Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, April 16. Click here to register a team.
