An early lesson in Christmas spirit

Wyndham’s most disadvantaged residents won’t go without this Christmas.

More than 300 grocery items have been donated to UnitingCare Werribee Support and Housing (WSH), collected by the staff and families of Wyndham Early Learning and Family Day Centre.

Centre co-ordinator Kylie Williams said she was looking for a way to get the centre involved in the community when she put the call-out to families and staff to donate.

“We thought it would be a great idea to help the needy at Christmas, so we contacted WSH and asked if they would accept the donation,” she said.

“We then collected food items for a month, and people really got involved with the project. It was a great way for us to teach children to get involved and help those less fortunate.”

WSH chief executive Carol Muir described the donation as “wonderful”.

“We help the most financially vulnerable people in the municipality with food parcels,” she said.

“The beginning of December, as we approach Christmas, is one of our busiest times. Families and individuals come for food and even Christmas toys for their children. The pantry often becomes quite empty.”

WHS provides support to individuals, couples and families at risk of or living with homelessness.
