Wyndham could have its own car- pooling service under an initiative being considered by the council.
Wyndham council is considering establishing a program, to be called the Western Melbourne Car-pooling Scheme, as part of its Get Wyndham Moving campaign.
It would be similar to a Community Carpooling Association model that has been operating in New South Wales since 2009.
Under that model, a database matches members with people nearby travelling in the same direction.
Members can access the service via a website and free mobile apps available on iPhone and Android phones.
Wyndham council is seeking formal support from western region councils, community organisations such as LeadWest and major employers.
Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the car-pooling service aimed to reduce traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, the cost of petrol and other associated car costs.
“Early investigations indicated around 250 participants would be required to make the scheme viable,” she said.
“Further feasibility studies will be done to determine details such as potential costs, guidelines and the management required.”
