The rise of the selfie has inspired a Werribee artist’s latest work.
Bronwyn Watson is one of nine Australian artists showcasing her work in Hawthorn Town Hall Gallery’s new exhibition, Likeness, which opened on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Werribee resident, who completed a thesis last year focusing on the common ground between selfies and self-portraits, is exhibiting three pieces from her photographic series, Creating Myselfie.
Ms Watson took a series of selfies in three different coloured costumes and wigs for her trio of works.
“You know when you take a selfie that you’re going to post online and you take 40 selfies but only put one up?” she said.
“It was taking those 40 selfies and smushing them down together and seeing what happens.
“I did a series of selfies and put them into Photoshop and have blended them into each other so you have these watercolour-like works, and they’re really interesting.”
Ms Watson, who cites Frida Kahlo and James Gleeson among her favourite artists, said she had drawn for as long as she could remember and had completed a bachelor of fine art and design at Australian Catholic University.
This is her first big exhibition.
Ms Watson, who works out of a home studio, says she’s not a disciplined artist and works only when struck by inspiration.
“I’m definitely a procrastinator, but when it happens it happens all at once.
“I’m always thinking and reading and taking in other artworks.”
Likeness is open until December 20.
