Street art is gracing the walls of Werribee CBD laneways as part of a Wyndham council push to re-activate the business hub.
Well-known street artist Adrian Doyle and emerging local artists Megan Bonnici, Elizabeth Hooker, Jasmine Ordasi and Isaac Allengame spent last week adorning the two laneways adjoining Station Place with a collection of colourful creations.
The art, funded under the state government’s community crime prevention program, will stay in place for a year after which new art will be put up as part of an ongoing program.
Additional lighting has been installed in the area to help improve community safety in the retail precinct.
Wyndham councillor Peter Gibbons said the project was a great opportunity for artists to display their work.
“This program is so important – not only because it engages our community in the arts but because it helps to address the issue of community safety by adding vibrancy through artworks in one of the high-profile areas in Werribee,” Cr Gibbons said.
Wyndham residents can expect to see more public art across the municipality, with the council officially endorsing its arts in public places policy last month.
The policy will involve the council using public art to help “activate” open spaces, particularly in Werribee’s CBD.
Wyndham’s current outdoor art collection is valued at about $2 million.
