Passionate coach in running for community award

For Point Cook’s Errol Hart, athletics is everything.

The Wyndham Track and Field Club athletics coach’s passion for the sport has been recognised by being named a finalist in the state government’s Community Sport and Recreation Awards in the category of community coach of the year.

“I don’t know who nominated me, but it’s embarrassing and humbling,” the former decathlete said.

“I don’t look to get recognised, none of us volunteer coaches do. But it’s good to know people are watching the hard work we put in and appreciate what we do as we work hard and try to build a stronger community.”

Hart volunteers six days a week, both on and off the track, as he trains 22 athletes aged between 10 and 31. He’s been coaching at the club, of which he is a co-founder, for almost 30 years.

“I get a lot from this sport … so it’s good to give something back,” he said.

“It’s so gratifying to see my athletes grow from kids to adolescents and then into adults as I coach them.

“I have a special bond with them. I spend my time trying to harness their strength and bring the best out in them.

“What I tell them is it doesn’t matter what level they’re at as long as they’re doing their best. It’s about finding their potential.”

The award winners will be announced at the MCG on November 9.
