My Wyndham: Gasey Bassky

Gasey Bassky lives outside the frame. She’s tried her hand at many things and now runs a quirky framing business from her Truganina home. The busy entrepreneur spoke to Esther Lauaki

What’s your connection to the area?

I love it in Wyndham. I grew up in Brighton but moved to Truganina seven years ago. Everything is better in the west: the people, the housing, the lifestyle, I love all of it.

How did you get into the framing business?

It’s not a profession many women do and those who are in the industry keep their cards close to their chest. Some years ago, a man showed me the secret techniques of framing and working with materials like marble and mirrors and that’s how it all started for me. The business has grown and I make everything from mirrors, chalkboards, clocks and prints.

Outside your home-based business, what else do you do?

I’ve got a finger in every pie. I make scented soy candles, write personalised songs for special occasions, I was once a taxi-driver and I’m a table tennis coach at Overnewton Anglican Community College in Keilor. My mother used to say to me, ‘Don’t do too many things’, so I did everything.

What’s your favourite thing to do?

I enjoy making people happy. It’s the best job in the world. I love it when people come to me and say they want me to do something beautiful with a print or a photo that means a lot to them. Working with the kids as a table tennis coach is also one of my favourite things. I always tell them they can do anything they put their minds to and that the words ‘give up’ should not exist in their vocabularies.
