Three-peat in sight for Werribee Centrals

Werribee Centrals are gunning for an incredible second three-peat in a decade in the Geelong and District Netball League A-grade.

The Centurions will meet Thomson in the grand final at St Albans Reserve on Saturday and coach Lina Iuta hopes lightning can strike twice for her club.

“They did a three-peat from 2005-07,” Iuta told Star Weekly.

“That was one of the goals I set when I came to the club because if you can do a three-peat once you can do it again.”

The most impressive aspect of this year’s team is that it bares only a slight resemblance to the one that kicked off the current streak in 2013.

Even last year’s team was a whole lot different to the one that will pull on the bibs for this year’s decider.

New recruits Madeline Hodgson and Gemma Grimmond have boosted the attack, while Janelle Bragg and Megan Noonan are no longer stop-gap players, taking on bigger roles this season.

“Each year is new but each year I use the same philosophy,” Iuta said.

“Every player is different and brings a different dynamic to the game. Each have their own skills, so it’s just a matter of trying to gel that together to become one unit rather than seven individual units.

“We’re all on the same page. We all want to win a grand final and that’s what it’s all about.”

Thomson was the only team to beat Werribee Centrals in the home-and-away rounds, in June, but the Centurions exacted revenge in the semi-final two weeks ago.

“We didn’t care who we had to play, we’re there to win a grand final,” Iuta said.

“Every team we come up against is always tough. Being on top of the ladder, you have to raise the bar each week.”
