A Scout group has helped to replant creekside trees destroyed by vandals.
Council officers were shocked to discover someone had driven illegally along Skeleton Creek, Werribee, late last month, tearing out many of the 600 trees and shrubs that were planted by volunteers on National Tree Day in July.
Support stakes and protective plastic screens for the plants were found strewn along the creek banks on August 21.
Members of the 1st Point Cook Scout Group recently rolled their sleeves up to help Wyndham council replace the plantings.
Councillor and environment and sustainability portfolio-holder Peter Gibbons said he was disappointed by the mindless destruction.
“We’ve got a great community here in Wyndham, with people willing to put in the effort to make Skeleton Creek a welcoming space for residents and the perfect habitat for local wildlife.
“It’s hard to fathom why anyone would want to tear that down,” Cr Gibbons said.
“While the community bears the cost of this vandalism, it’s reassuring to know we have a fantastic group of young people from a local Scout group, who have helped council repair the damage and plant more trees.”
