Portelli family wins Maltese cook-off

Werribee’s Portelli family know their Maltese cuisine.

Matriarch Carmen joined forces with her son Luke and daughter Annie to take out the 2015 Maltese Cook-Off at the William Angliss Institute.

The trio went up against seven other teams to create the best Maltese-inspired two-course meal from scratch.

The Portellis served up broad bean soup with fresh cheeselets, followed by prickly pear ice-cream with an almond slice biscuit.

It’s the fifth year that Maltese-Australian community group Nisga has run the event.

Organiser Sandra Mooney said it was important to pass on the tastes and recipes of Maltese cuisine down the generations.
