Leaks force kids off Werribee sports centre courts

PROBLEMS at Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre have again led to the cancellation of children’s basketball games.

The centre was forced to cancel nine junior basketball games on March 4 because water was leaking from its roof onto two courts.

It is not the first time the centre has been forced to cancel games this year.

Heathdale Hornets under-12 team manager Natalie Dunn said the team had missed two of its 12 matches because water was leaking onto courts. The team also missed a game three weeks ago because of a faulty backboard.

This time it was the club’s under-14 team that was affected.

Ms Dunn said she was fed up with games being called off because the centre was in a state of disrepair. She called on Wyndham Council and the YMCA to redevelop it immediately.

“[The latest cancellations] show that the roof is definitely deteriorating and what concerns me further is that we have not hit the winter season yet.”

A YMCA spokeswoman said the centre had previously repaired the leaking roof but rain at the end of February meant more repairs were needed. She said management was confident the roof had now been completely repaired.

The council said it was progressing with plans to redevelop the centre, with design work to be finished this year.

As part of the planned redevelopment, the centre will be expanded to include 10-12 indoor basketball courts, seating for 1500 spectators, table tennis facilities, a cafe and upgrades to the gym and outdoor netball courts.
