WYNDHAM City Rhinos coach Lloyd Rohe recalls being “gutted” after watching his troops lose a second Victorian Rugby Union second division grand final in three years in heartbreaking extra-time last season.
Rohe described the players that ran out on that fateful day as “warriors” and will never forget their impact over a sustained period of time that brought prolonged success to the Rhinos.
Only the shell of last year’s team that was beaten by Melbourne in the grand final will remain in Rhinos colours as the club rebuilds with a younger side that will be hoping to summon the spirit of those who have worn the jersey with pride in the past.
“We’re rebuilding with a young and vibrant team and that’s exciting,” Rohe said.
“But the boys were warriors last season and I’ll never forget that. The youngsters have got big boots to fill.”
Rohe enters his second season as coach of the Rhinos.
It is actually his first pre-season in charge because he took over the coaching duties after round one last season.
The buzz around Mossfiel Reserve is at fever pitch with a new crop of players ready to make a name for themselves.
“With youth comes excitement,” Rohe said.
“They tend to bring a lot of enthusiasm and regenerate the whole team.
“The older players realise they have to keep up with the young players.”
Rohe has attacked the off-season with three goals in mind.
His “primary focus” was to get his players as fit as they can be, ensure they are completing the simple tasks by focusing on the “basics” and getting his combination down pat before the season opener later this month.
Despite the changes in personnel, Rohe has one outcome in mind.
“My expectation now and always will be to play finals,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Rhinos will have a new captain in 2012.
George Waru, one of the players staying on from last year’s team, was voted in by his peers.
For a long time, the half-back has led with his actions and voice on the field, but will now do it in an official capacity.
“They’re used to him and used to his voice. He’s someone that will command respect,” Rohe said.
