City hits bump in the road on state funds

WYNDHAM’S roads could still receive funding for upgrades despite being ignored in last week’s state budget, according to Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury.

The budget included $548million in funding to “to ease road congestion in Melbourne’s suburbs”. But none of the money was allocated to improve Wyndham’s problem roads.

Mr Elsbury acknowledged many of the city’s roads were in need of duplication and upgrades but said there wasn’t enough money in the budget to provide the funding needed to improve them.

“I know roads all over the City of Wyndham need improving and I will raise it with the minister [for roads] again.”

There was a chance the upgrades would be funded later in the year, with VicRoads granted funds to carry out projects it deemed necessary, he said.

Lara MP John Eren said the budget was disappointing for residents who had tirelessly campaigned for local roads to be duplicated.

“Between 6am-9am it is just gridlocked across Wyndham and it is not fair for the residents. “

Opposition roads spokesman Luke Donnellan said it was disappointing the area received no new roads funding in the budget.

A second river crossing should have been funded to compliment the West Gate Bridge, he said.
