Refugee rights guaranteed as Wyndham signs declaration

Wyndham is set to become a refugee ‘welcome zone’ after the council signed a declaration to uphold the rights of refugees.

It is one of 24 Victorian councils to sign the declaration as part of Refugee Week, which ends on Saturday.

Mayor Kim McAliney said refugees often had a long, traumatic journey before arriving in Australia.

“We hope that by signing this declaration we can help them feel more settled in our community,” he said.
