VAFA: Point Cook Bulldogs lock in finals berth

POINT Cook has clinched a berth in the Victorian Amateur Football Association division 4 finals for the first time.

It was a landmark weekend for one of the newest expansion clubs – a senior club for only three years will get to experience the business end for the first-time under coach Daniel Fraser.

The Bulldogs locked in their place with a hard-fought 16-point win over West Brunswick at Point Cook Oval on Saturday, despite shocking kicking for goal.

Of their 35 shots , 21 went through for behinds.

They held a slender advantage at every change before sealing victory with five goals to four in a tense last quarter.

Hard-at-it Ricky Munn was best for the Bulldogs, while Mark Pozzuto and Brenden Lucas booted three goals apiece.

The Bulldogs’ win created a clear gulf between the top four and the rest of the teams.

With three rounds remaining and 40 points in the bank, the Dogs are an unassailable four wins clear of North Brunswick, West Brunswick and Manningham Cobras, who each have 24 points.

In Premier B, Werribee Districts remain in the safety zone, despite a 62-point loss to Old Melburnians at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday.

The young Tigers were no match for a finals contending team, but got solid performances out of Matthew Dean, Aaron Taylor and Josh Huxtable.

In division 3, Old Westbourne Grammarians were well off the pace against Ivanhoe, losing by a whopping 147 points on the road at Ivanhoe Park.
