Residents doubly delighted over win

RESIDENTS of a Tarneit street are celebrating a Wyndham Council decision to reject an application to build four double-storey houses at the end of their street.

The proposed development was for four three-bedroom houses on a block in Windward Close.

The application was rejected last week against the advice of the council’s planning department.

Residents had campaigned against the development for the past two months over fears it could bring 12 new residents and cars to the narrow street.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow urged councillors to knock back the application on the basis it was an overdevelopment out of place in the street.

“While I agree we must provide housing diversity, we must also ensure we respect the character of the neighbourhood, and in this case I have concerns that the development does not respect the character of the neighbourhood which is predominantly single, detached dwellings,” Cr Goodfellow said.

“I could not find any other units in close proximity to this one. Nearly every other house was either a single or double-storey house on a large block.”

Cr Shane Bourke said it would be wrong to approve the development in such a tight street.

He raised concerns about parking and asked how garbage trucks would collect rubbish.

“To place four double-storey units on this block would be a major overdevelopment,” Cr Bourke said.

Windward Close resident Vicky Hall said she was ecstatic the development had been refused.

“The council has finally seen you cannot over develop areas like Seasons estate because the infrastructure was put in for single dwellings.”

Mrs Hall said residents also presented the council with a 320-signature petition highlighting their opposition to multi-unit developments anywhere in the estate.

The developer has 60 days to appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
