POLICE have been out in force snaring Wyndham’s serial driving offenders, including an unlicensed woman caught texting and on drugs while behind the wheel.
The woman was nabbed during the first five days of a blitz using residential records and covert patrols.
Operation Road Bia, which began last Wednesday, tagged Wyndham as a high-risk region, and homes in on repeat dangerous drivers, drink-drivers and those who flee police.
Traffic police, detectives and uniform officers have also been deployed to Darebin, Hume, Whittlesea, Geelong, Dandenong and Casey.
The blitz has already detected more than 900 driving offences statewide.
On Sunday, a Wyndham Vale woman, 24, was caught speeding and texting while driving in Werribee. She later tested positive to drugs.
Police spotted the woman driving erratically along Ballan Road about 6.10pm and was detected travelling at 74 km/h in a 50 zone before being pulled over and given a roadside drug test. The woman is expected to be charged with driving while suspended, using a mobile phone while driving, speeding and other driving offences. Her car was impounded and police will make an application for its forfeiture.
Wyndham’s Acting Inspector Damien Christensen said the blitz would be staggered across different parts of Wyndham this week.
“We’re one of seven key areas across the state and we’re targeting the high-risk drivers and repeat offenders, as identified through road police intelligence databases,” he said.
“Whether it’s seatbelts or speeding, drink-driving or being involved in police pursuits, unlicensed or disqualified drivers . . . the behaviour of these people is criminal and presents an unacceptable danger to everyone else.”
Acting Inspector Christensen said Wyndham was home “a significant percentage” of the state’s 500 worst serial road offenders.
