Trailbike rider seriously injured in Hoppers Crossing police chase

A TARNEIT trailbike rider who led police on a chase through Hoppers Crossing has serious back injuries after colliding with a police car on Thursday.

Police began pursuing the 21-year-old man when they detected his unregistered trail bike travelling along Forsyth Road about 2.30pm yesterday.

The rider sped across a grass plantation and police lost sight of the bike.

Switching off the car’s lights and sirens, police conducted a search of the adjoining industrial area around Dunlop Road.

A police spokeswoman said officers were turning into a driveway when they spotted the bike travelling along a nature strip towards them.

She said the rider lost control of the bike and tried to ride between a power pole and a cement mixer, before ploughing into the front of the police car.

The rider was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
