Mutilated kangaroo dumped in Werribee street

POLICE are urging witnesses to come forward after a kangaroo was found beheaded and dumped in a suburban court in Werribee.

The mutilated remains of the animal were discovered by Sherrin Court residents at 7.30am on Monday.

Wyndham North’s Senior Constable Dylan Langerak said the kangaroo’s legs had been bound and its head cut off.

He said it appeared the kangaroo had been killed at a different location before its remains were dumped.

“It is obviously a very despicable and disgusting act,” he said.

“The animal appears to have been in a lot of distress before it was killed. We believe it was killed late [Sunday] night and then placed in Sherrin Court in the early hours of the morning.”

Senior Constable Langerak urged anyone who may have seen anything to contact police. “We believe there would have been people who saw something in the early hours of the morning and we urge witnesses to come forward.”

He said it appeared to be an isolated incident but warned cruelty to animals would not be tolerated.

Wildlife Victoria spokeswoman Amy Amato described the attack as “horrific”.

She urged anybody with information to come forward, fearing those responsible may strike again. “It seems clear this has been done for shock value,” she said. “We’re lucky enough to live in a country where we have wildlife on our doorstep — they’re something we should cherish rather than destroy.”

Wildlife of Werribee founder Dawn Stanford said she was appalled by the incident. “To do that to a defenseless animal is absolutely disgraceful.”

Under the Wildlife Act, this type of offence could result in a $7042 fine or six months in jail.
