ELDERLY Point Cook residents and people with disabilities will benefit from a new community bus service, making it easier for them to travel around Wyndham.
The bus, based at Featherbrook Community Centre, was funded by the Point Cook Community Bank, the council and the state government and will be operated by Link Community Transport.
Bank branch manager Dora Pyke says the service will help seniors and disabled residents who live at home and need help getting to appointments, recreational activities and shopping centres.
“This is an important project for us to support to ensure that older people and people with a disability can get out and about in and around Point Cook.”
The bus service will begin a nine-month trial next month.
If it’s successful, the bank will fund the bus for a further two years.
Council social development manager Heather Johnson says volunteer drivers are needed to help run the program. “As a volunteer driver you’ll be driving a brand new mini-bus and you will meet some amazing people during your day and give them a helping hand.”
Volunteers must have a valid driver’s licence.
